Knights fare well at Falconer Tournament

FALCONER, N.Y. — Eisenhower left this weekend’s Patrick J. Morales Memorial Wrestling Tournament with an individual champion and a fifth-place finish in the team standings.

Spencer Head’s championship at 152 pounds led the way for the Knights (126.5 team points), who trailed only Harbor Creek (296), Falconer (259.5), Randolph (158) and Clarion (147) in the 21-team field. Head wrestled to a 16-8 major decision over Kane’s Aiden Hulings in the championship final to cap off an impressive run through his bracket.

“Spencer’s bracket was tough,” said Ike coach Kris Black. “He was the sixth seed coming in so he had a tough run all the way through. Every match was tough, but he wrestled really well. In my opinion he would have been the outstanding wrestler — he beat the one seed and the two seed to win, so it was a pretty good tournament for him.”

Along with Head’s first-place finish, Eisenhower had a runner-up with Logan Jacquay taking second at 106. Jacquay moved through to the finals before dropping a close 9-8 decision to Randolph’s Marcus Evans.

“This was Logan’s first time competing at 106,” Black said. “He looked strong there. I think that will be a nice weight for him.”

Sam Holt overcame a tough loss in the semis to take third for Ike at 132 pounds, Matt Huling was fourth at 195, and Nate Holt and Alex Barnett finished sixth at 126 and 160, respectively.

“Overall I thought they all wrestled pretty well,” added Black. “Taking fifth out of 21 with a lot of good competition is a nice achievement. Even the kids who didn’t place wrestled well. Guys are taking that next step and we’re starting to come of age as a team, we just have to keep working and getting better.”

Harbor Creek’s team championship was spurred by individual titles from Nick Oosterkamp (126) and Sam Sallot (132) along with six second-place finishes. Sallot was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Former Warren Area High School grappler Jimmy Kramer won an individual title for Falconer at 120 pounds. Sheffield was also in attendance, finishing 14th with 51.5 team points.

Eisenhower returns to the mat Wednesday at Seneca.
