Warren Americans stay unbeaten with 15-4 win over Elk County

RIDGWAY – Warren’s Boys Minors All-Stars improved to 3-0 and advanced to the winners’ bracket final with a 15-4 win at Elk County on Saturday.

After two one-run wins to open all-star tournament play, the Warren Americans brought the offensive fireworks this day, with 13 hits and seven extra-base hits.

A five-run first inning would start things off for Warren. Tommy Nyquist, Brady Berdine and Eric Dippold started with ringing base hits and Owen Blum would hit the first of two long doubles on the day to key the inning. Matt DeSimone and Aidan Zdarko finished the inning off with RBI groundouts.

It was clear how Elk County had advanced with a 17-7 win over Bradford, because their bats were on fire to start. Rocco Delhunty tripled off Dippold to start the game. Following an error and single, Nick Meyer blasted a three-run homer to left-center field and if was quickly 5-4.

That’s when Nyquist got the call. After throwing 5 2/3 shutout innings against St. Marys in the tournament-opening 1-0 win, he would again be asked to shut down a solid offense.

And he did – again.

Nyquist would strike out 11 over 5 1/3 hitless innings. This allowed Warren’s bats to get going.

Chase Sitler started the top of the second with a walk before Nyquist doubled him home, and Dippold followed with his second hit in two innings, an RBI single to make it 7-4 Warren.

Nyquist tripled in the fourth and scored on a Berdine double. Berdine would later score on a wild pitch for a 9-4 lead.

Reid Olsen walked for Warren in the fifth and eventually scored on Caden Beers’ RBI single to right. After Johnny Palmieri laid down a perfect bunt to move Beers. Nyquist walked to put two runners on. With runners on second and third, Berdine hit a fly ball to right that would score two. Beers tagged up from third to score and Nyquist scored all the way from second on heads-up baserunning when the ball got away from the infield.

Blum, Owen Becker and Chase Sitler hit doubles in a three-run sixth to give Warren a 15-4 lead.

Blum and Nyquist finished with three hits each, and Berdine and Dippold two apiece for Warren.

After Nyquist got the first out in the bottom of the sixth, Blum finished it out. DeSimone threw out a potential basestealer for the second out of the frame, and Blum snagged a hard groundball up the middle for the last out of the game.

Palmieri made a nice lunging catch in left field during the game.

Nyquist has allowed one hit over 11 innings in the tournament.

The Americans advance to play DuBois at 6 p.m. Thursday at Betts-Jackson Field in the winners’ bracket final.
