Jerome (Jerry) L. Martin, Captain, USN, Retired, died in San Diego, California on August 27, 2019, surrounded by his family. He will be forever remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, mentor, and friend.
Jerry was born in Clearfield, PA to Edward J. and Marian (Neurohr, Solomon) Martin, August 22, 1940. The oldest of five, Jerry and his younger siblings (Tom, Trish, Mary, and Terry) grew up in Warren. He also became brother to Barb, Frank, Steve, and Maureen, the children of and Francis and Frances Solomon.
Jerry was a 1958 graduate of Warren High School. He distinguished himself as Senior Class President and Quarterback of the High School Football Dragons. He was an Eagle Scout and Ad Altare Dei Medalist, for Troop #6 of St. Joseph Parish. Jerry received the Elks Club Scholarship, graduating from the University of Cincinnati, with a B.S. degree in Industrial Management in 1963. He attended the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, and was commissioned an Ensign in February, 1964.
While stationed at Pearl Harbor, Jerry met and married Mary Christine Green in 1966. They began their family and despite many Navy moves, mostly lived in San Diego.
Jerry served as a Surface Warfare Officer on many ships including USS McMorris, USS Kraus, USS Bronstein, USS Horne and USS Cook. Jerry's sea duty culminated as the Commanding Officer for USS Bradley from 198082. He earned an M.S. in Economics and an M.A. in International Relations, and was a graduate of the Naval War College. Jerry also served as the Chief of Staff to the Commander Middle East Force in the Persian Gulf from March 198788. He completed his Naval career as the Director Tactical Training, Fleet AntiSubmarine Warfare Training Center Pacific in 1991.
In retirement, Jerry was a Financial Advisor, serving as a trustee for twenty-three years to the Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery in Lisle (IL), and taught as an Adjunct Professor at the Naval War College at Great Lakes. Upon his return to San Diego, Jerry logged more than 1700 hours volunteering as a Docent for the USS Midway.
Jerry is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Mary Christine, children, Kevin (Ann), Steve (Stacey), Michelle (Bob), Valerie, and seven beautiful grandchildren.
