Troy Howard Onink, 51, passed away on Friday, August 24, 2018 after an extended illness. Troy was a lifelong resident of Warren County and currently resided in Russell with his wife Heidi von Kleist. He and Heidi married on August 24, 2002.
Troy graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1985, and Slippery Rock University with a Master’s Degree in Cardiac Rehab. A nationally recognized authority on paying for college, Troy was the CEO of Stratagee and a contributor to Forbes where he wrote the widely followed blog College Crossroads. Troy was also a columnist for Investment News, and a contributor to Private Wealth, Financial Advisor, myStockOptions.com and NAPFA Advisor. He was regularly featured by Yahoo! Finance, Forbes Magazine, CNN/Money, Fox News, CBS, Bloomberg, Reuters and the Wall Street Journal.
Troy was the proud father of three daughters; Tess, Morgan and Hannah Onink. He was also an amazing uncle to his five nephews, one niece, 7 great nephews and 7 great nieces. He is survived by his mother, Joyce Onink of Sugar Grove, his sisters Tammy (Barry) Van Ord, Terri (Neal) Hoisington of Sugar Grove, and brother Todd (Lisa) Onink of Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his father Gail Onink of Sugar Grove.
Troy was a world traveler due to his career, but the trips he enjoyed the most were the ones he got to take his family along. From fishing trips to Northern Michigan and Ontario to tagging along on business trips to Universities, he always encouraged his family to join him in his adventures. He was an excellent cook and a master with a smoker, often spending hours, if not days, in prep before parties. He also enjoyed his excursions to the race track with the plumb colored crazy racing team. Troy had “the gift of gab” and was known for his story telling and attention to detail. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, attending local sporting events and any activity that he could share with his family. Through the ups and downs of his life, it was his deep faith that inspired his decisions.
