L. Ruth Bennett, 89, passed on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. Ruth was born on January 18, 1928 in Kinzua, Pa. and was a longtime resident of Sheffield, Pa. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Don Bennett; her parents, Pia (Bianco) and Emmanuel Peterson; three brothers, Edward, Raymond and Carl Peterson; four sisters, Rena Hammond, Ida Dunlap, Viola Plyer and Doris Jenkins; her son Terry Peterson and her dear friend Domenic Mangioni. Ruth is survived by her two daughters, Sue Bennett of Erie, Pa., and Marla Snavley of Warren, Pa.,; two step daughters, Joan Peterson of Busti, N.Y. and Janice “Lucky” Isaman of Little Valley, N.Y.; two step sons, Don Bennett, Jr of Warren, Pa., and Jerry Bennett; several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren and her best buddie Paulette Grove.
Ruth attended Warren High School where she was the captain of the women’s basketball team and worked as a switchboard operator for the Bell Telephone Company. She was a staunch Democrat and served for many years as a Democratic Committee Woman in Sheffield. Ruth owned and operated her own antique business, Ruth’s Junque, until into her 80s. She loved politics, buying, selling and collecting antiques, watching CNN, working in her yard and especially entertaining her friends and family for coffee and lively conversation and solving the world’s problems. Ruth will be remembered for her feisty personality, sharp sense of humor and her keen ability to “wheel a deal.”
Friends will be received at the Borden Funeral Home in Sheffield on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. with Dennis Sturdevant, Certified Lay Servant. Burial will be at the Willowdale Cemetery in Bradford, Pa. Memorials may be made to the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Service.
