County officials are preparing to place a ballot box at the Fifth Ave. entrance to the Warren County Courthouse for those looking to drop off mail-In or absentee ballots.
The box, assuming approval by the Board of Elections during a meeting on Wednesday, would be placed between the two sets of doors at the courthouse's public entrance.
Elections Director Lisa Rivett said she has worked with the Sheriff's office to secure the box in a place "in full view of the camera."
"This gives another avenue to have people drop them off," Commissioner Tricia Durbin said.
"(It) would keep them from having to come to my office," Rivett said.
That results in a more convenient drop-off location.
Concern was expressed that one person might bring in ballots for a bunch of people but Rivett said that "most of the time what I see" is, for example, "a wife has hers and her husbands."
"(This would) prevent people from having to go through the courthouse," Commissioner Ben Kafferlin explained.
He emphasized that each ballot has a bar code so voters could still reach out to Rivett to ensure that their ballot has been received.
Rivett said she would empty the box once per day.
"The ballot box will be sealed just like it would be if it was at the polls," she said.
