Class lunch
The Class of WHS Class of 1959 will meet for lunch at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Perkins Restaurant. Perkins is handicap accessible. As always guests and spouses are always welcome.
Warren County Wonders
Congratulations to the winners for the January page for our fundraising calendar WCCBI/ACA "Warren County Wonders 2019." First place goes to James Muscaro for "Snow Cow" taken in Pleasant Township. Second place goes to Allan Branthoover for "Frosty Morning." Third place goes to Chris Goff for "Hanging On" taken at the Conewango Creek.
This month ACA will accept two mouths: February and December. Have fun trying to capture some of our wonders. The deadline for entries is Feb. 25 at noon. Check the ACA website to see requirements for photos and past winners.
If you would like to have fun learning within that creative side of yourself, check out the classes offered at ACA. Explore winter classes and when they will occur. Coming up will be classes for photography, acting, beading, chip carving, ukulele, and metal smithing. Cindy Nowacki will be doing a one time Valentine themed painting class in Feb. Some teachers need to know two weeks ahead how many students are signed up to be able to have enough supplies. In some cases teachers are able to adjust class times to meet enrollment needs. ACA is always looking to have more teachers sharing an art they love and want others to learn that creative part of themselves. Also there is room for more board members to help ACA carry out its mission. Again, details are on the website.
Monday Night Movies
Monday Night Movies at the Warren Public Library will continue on February 5. This event is free of charge and begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Jefferson Room in the basement level of the library. This week's PG-13-rated, 105-minute-long movie stars Fionn Whitehead, Damien Bonnard, Aneurin Barnard, and Tom Hardy. The film is a WWII thriller about the evacuation of Dunkirk, France, in which 400,000 Allied troops were rescued following a catastrophic defeat. Call the library at 723-4650 for the exact title of this and other movies in this series as the library's movie license does not permit listing the titles of movies outside the library.
Halls Of Ivy
Dr. Michael A. Nichols, son of Nancy Nasman Nichols of Warren and the late Chuck Nichols, has assumed the position of Chairman of the Chemistry Department at John Carroll University at University Heights, Ohio.
He is a graduate of Warren High School and Clarion University. He received his PhD in Chemistry from Duke University. He did his Post Doctural Studies at Brown University. He was a visiting Professor at Kansas State University and Ohio University. He is in his 23rd year at John Carroll University.
Youngsville meeting
A R.O.Y. Business Association meeting will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at Youngsville Borough Building, 40 Railroad Street, Youngsville, to gather ideas, to determine a direction we, the businesses, desire to take. Adult education classes
The Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit #5 (IU5) Adult Education & Career Readiness Program offers a variety of opportunities for people who want to improve their basic skills to earn a diploma, transition to college, change careers, or advance in their present job. IU5 Adult Education is now enrolling for free adult education classes in 14 locations across Erie, Warren, and Venango counties. Classes include basic reading, writing and math skills; GED®/HiSet® Exam preparation; workplace readiness skills; Algebra I & II; and English as a Second Language (ESL).
"Passing the GED® Exam and earning your diploma is just one of the options we offer," says Caryl Unseld, Supervisor for State and Federal Programs at IU5. "We also offer basic skills, like reading and math, for those who already have a high school diploma. We have classes to improve your English for new Americans. However, gaining basic academic skills is just the first step."
All of IU5's adult education classes also provide students the opportunity to explore career pathways in high demand occupations. Students meet regularly with a dedicated Transition Specialist and staff from the local CareerLink to explore options for postsecondary training, job placement, and on-the-job training, including ways to fund further schooling. Students also receive support from instructors and other IU5 staff who can help them overcome barriers to work and school like childcare and transportation.
"Classes are individualized to meet students' needs," says Elizabeth Wilson, IU5's Coordinator for Adult Education. "This means the academics are tailored to meet the students' goals, but student are also provided lots of one-on-one and small group time with staff to support their learning."
Students can choose from one of 14 convenient class locations in Erie, Oil City, Franklin, and Warren, as well as smaller communities like Corry, Union City, North East, Lawrence Park, Millcreek, and Fairview. Daytime, afternoon, and evening classes make it easy to attend. Distance learning options are also available; and a nationwide network of tutors gives students access to trained volunteers to help with academics and other needed skills. All classes and materials are provided at no cost to students.
