McDonald takes 6th for Eagles

GROVE CITY — The annual Fred Bell Tournament in Grove City is among the toughest regular-season tournaments in all of Northwestern Pennsylvania.

Knowing that, Youngsville wrestling coach Dave Myers entered the weekend, hoping to get one or two podium finishers among his team and 139-pound senior Logan McDonald made sure that came to fruition.

McDonald won his opening three matches of the weekend, ultimately finishing sixth in a fine showing among the best the region has to offer.

Myers noted that the seedings didn’t exactly favor McDonald at the start as he was paired up with sixth-seeded Nate Stearns of Titusville in the opening round. Trailing 1-0 late in the third period, the Youngsville standout secured the winning takedown to upset Stearns and advanced to the second round.

McDonald would pin his next two opponents to end the first day of the tournament by advancing to the quarterfinals.

Saturday opened with a loss to Montour’s Peter Chacon, but McDonald bounced back nicely with a defeat of McDowell’s Bobby Blue to secure a spot on the podium. After defeating General McLane’s Derek Dube, McDonald dropped a hard-fought 6-0 decision to Cranberry’s Dane Wenner.

The fifth-place bout ended in an 8-3 decision defeat to Meadville’s Jacoby Thompson, but it couldn’t take away from the strong showing.

“Coach Morris and I can’t say enough about Logan’s determination,” said Myers. “He wrestled his heart out this weekend. It was a great measuring stick to use as the postseason quickly approaches.”

Despite having no additional place-winners, Youngsville’s McDonald wasn’t the only winner on the weekend. Griffin Daley picked up a victory in the preliminaries at 152 pounds and 215-pounder Graeme Minnis earned a 7-4 decision over Sharpsville’s Majaiz Pugh for his first career varsity win.

The Eagles return to action Thursday when they visit county foe Sheffield.
