Penley: ‘What a game by our guys’

RUSSELL — Nearly everyone got into the scoring act Friday night, allowing Eisenhower to post an impressive 41-6 football victory over Iroquois.

“What a game by our guys,” Knights head coach Jim Penley said. “I’m super proud of our offensive line. We had some big injuries to overcome and they came together tonight. Mike Vanatta, Caleb Penley, Gannon Jaquay, Drake Vernderhoof and Mike Jones played a heckuva game.”

How good was the line play?

Well, the Eisenhower skill players were the beneficiaries.

Benji Bauer rushed 16 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns; Keegan Eckstrom, who also returned a kickoff 90 yards for a TD, had 29 yards on the ground on three carries; Shawn Pascuzzi completed 6 of 10 passes for 110 yards and scoring strike; and Wyatt Lookenhouse caught 11 passes for 99 yards and one TD. All told, seven different Knights accounted for points.

“Benji Bauer just gets better each week, just a great game by him,” Coach Penley said.

The compliments didn’t stop there.

“It was good to see Shawn Pascuzzi come in tonight and play his game,” Coach Penley added. “I was really proud of how he responded after a tough game last week. It was a nice job by the sophomore.

“You know, we overcame some big injuries. It was nice to see some young guys step up and show themselves tonight. It was just a great team win.”

The Braves were limited to 90 yards on the ground, led by Michael Hoopsick, who finished with 72 yards on 14 carries and a 13-yard touchdown run.

Eisenhower closes out its regular season next Friday at Maplewood.
