Jamestown CC athletes honored for academics

The National Junior College Athletic Association Region 3 has recognized 15 Jamestown Community College student-athletics as Academic All-Region selections for the 2020-21 academic school year.

In order to be recognized, all honorees had to have at least a 3.5 GPA and a minimum of 24 credit hours during the 2020-21 academic school year.

Softball led all women’s teams with three honorees followed by women’s basketball with two. Cross country and swimming & diving rounds out the list of women’s student-athletes with one honoree each.

Baseball led all men’s teams with three honorees while cross country, soccer, basketball, wrestling, swimming & diving and golf all had one honoree each.

The list of honorees includes:

Jackson Vanstrom, men’s cross country; Emma Redlecki, women’s cross country; David Talkington, men’s soccer; Jackson Vanstrom and Maksat Mametjumayev, men’s swimming & diving; Megan Stang, women’s swimming & diving; Jacob Hougan, men’s basketball; Kate Tedquist and Macey Lundmark, women’s basketball; Trenton Donahue, wrestling; Etahn Abegg, Yordangel Gonzalez and Talkington, baseball; Abigail Minnekine, Mackenzie Watson and Brynn Pagett, softball; and Anthony Gullo, men’s golf.

WNYAC ACADEMIC HONOREES

The academic awards keep rolling in for the Jamestown Community College student-athletes with 20 representatives receiving WNYAC Academic All-Conference honors.

To be eligible for this honor, all honorees must have earned at least a 3.30 GPA and with a minimum of 24 credit hours taken during the 2020-21 academic school year and participated in one season of sport.

For the men, swimming & diving and baseball led the way with three honorees each. Wrestling was close behind with two representatives. Cross country, basketball and golf all had one honoree apiece.

For the women, basketball led the way with four honorees. Softball had three, and cross country and swimming & diving rounded out the Jayhawk representatives with one honoree apiece.

HICKS IN ACTION THIS WEEKEND

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jamestown Community College women’s basketball forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights) is one of 40 NJCAA women’s basketball players selected to take part in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Star weekend at Clayton State University this week.

Selected from across all three divisions of the NJCAA, the 40 sophomores-to-be, will be divided into four teams with one day of practice and two days of games.

During her freshman season, Hicks was a monster in the low post, averaging 17.5 rebounds per game, which was second in the country in Division II. Four times she exceeded the 20-rebound mark, including a 25-rebound performance against Bryant & Stratton Albany.

Hicks was an offensive force as well, averaging 14 points per contest. Highlighting her season was recording a double-double in eight games, including a season-high 33 points at Niagara County CC.

Hicks also averaged 3.6 blocks per game which was third in the country. Hicks had a game-high eight blocks against Niagara County CC in the regular-season finale.

Hicks was recognized for her performances throughout the season, including being named to the NJCAA Region 3 All-Region Team and earning NJCAA Region 3 Player of the Week honors twice.

Hicks will be joined by Gabrielle McDuffie of Niagara County CC as representatives of Region 3.

Practice will be held Thursday with games scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
