Warren Area High School freshman Sam Harvey competed in his first powerlifting meet at the USA Powerlifting Pittsburgh Spring Classic on March 21.

Powerlifting is a sport where athletes compete in three lifts, the squat, bench press and deadlift. A team of three judges determine if an attempted lift counts, based on a strictly proscribed lifting form.

Harvey set four state records for his age group (14-15) and weight class (under 183 pounds). His set a new record in squat at 358 pounds, bench press at 248 pounds, “Push- Pull” (bench plus deadlift) at 623 pounds and a new total record (bench press, squat, deadlift) with 981 pounds.

Harvey is looking forward to competing in his next meet at the USA powerlifting Pennsylvania State Championships in Wilkes-Barre on April 24. There he hopes to extend his own records and pick up the state record for the deadlift at 402 pounds.
