Dragons see win streak end at Franklin

FRANKLIN — Franklin was 8-of-11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to hold off Warren, 65-59, on Monday.

Franklin’s win snaps the Dragons’ nine-game win streak and its own two-game losing streak. It was also a preview of two probable District 10 playoff teams, Franklin in 3A and Warren 4A. Franklin improves to 16-6 overall and Warren falls to 15-5.

“That is why I wanted to play them,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine.

The scoring was fast and furious down the stretch as the Dragons were forced to foul to stay in it. Franklin’s Easton Fulmer scored 11 of his 21 points in a 26-19 Franklin fourth.

“We missed some opportunities down the stretch when we needed to score to match their buckets,” said Coach Berdine. “Fulmer hit a ‘3’ with about (45 seconds) left from the ‘F’ on the Knight emblem, which is about 25 feet, when they were up one to put them up four. It was a huge shot.”

Ben Berdine’s three-point play cut the Franklin lead to 55-54, then he made another transition layup to cut the deficit to 57-56. Fulmer’s deep ‘3’ forced the Dragons to foul.

Fulmer finished with 21 points. Berdine led Warren with 24 points — 11 in the fourth quarter — and 12 rebounds.

Payton Barnes had three 3-pointers in an 18-13 Dragons’ first quarter.

Tommy Nyquist finished with 10 assists in the Warren loss.

Owen Becker led Warren’s junior varsity with 15 points in a 45-41 setback earlier Monday.
