JCC volleyball team ranked No. 4 in preseason poll

After finishing last season seventh at the NJCAA Division III volleyball championships, Jamestown Community College remains in good company to start the delayed 2021 spring season.

The Jayhawks are ranked No. 4 in the preseason poll released Tuesday.

Jamestown CC went 28-5 during the 2019-20 regular season to earn the No. 6 seed for the national tournament at the Rochester Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minnesota.

The Jayhawks, who are coached by Russell resident Ashley Lund, beat No. 11 Fashion IT, 23-25, 26-24, 25-11, 25-15, in the first round before losing in straight sets to No. 3 Columbus State CC.

In the consolation bracket, Jamestown CC lost to No. 7 Harper before beating No. 9 Jefferson CC in the seventh-place match.

Owens CC, which won its second straight championship last spring, opens this season as the preseason No. 1 with all five first-place votes. Columbus State (Ohio) CC is No. 2 followed by Brookhaven (Texas) College. Raritan Valley (New Jersey) CC rounds out the top five.

The Jayhawks list just three sophomores on their spring roster, including returning outside hitter Karleigh Haines (Jamestown/Jamestown). The two other sophomores are setter Emma Pumford (Jamestown/Jamestown) and defensive specialist/libero Britney Rounsville (Bradford, Pa./Bradford).

Freshmen include defensive specialist/libero Makenzie Carroll (Gowanda/Gowanda), outside hitter Emma McCarthy (Olean/Allegany-Limestone), middle hitter Paige Gabel (Gowanda/Gowanda), right side Abby Manelick (Jamestown/Southwestern), outside hitter Breanna Hopkins (Mayville/Chautauqua Lake) and setter Emily Madison.

Kirkwood (Iowa) CC is the preseason No. 1 in Division III men’s basketball followed by South Suburban (Illinois) College, Davidson-Davie (North Carolina) CC, Schoolcraft College (Michigan) and Muskegon (Michigan) CC. Davidson-Davie CC received three first-place votes, No. 9 Milwaukee Area Technical College received two first-place votes and South Suburban College received one first-place vote.

Niagara County CC opens the season just out of the top-20, listed as the first school under Receiving Votes.

Labette (Texas) CC is the Division III women’s No. 1 team, receiving all eight first-place votes. Macomb (Michigan) CC is No. 2 followed by Kirkwood CC, Lincoln Land (Illinois) CC and Johnson County (Kansas) CC. Niagara County CC is ranked No. 20 in the preseason poll.

Tyler (Texas) Junior College is the No. 1 team in the Division III baseball poll and received seven of eight first-place votes. Rowan College South Jersey-Gloucester is No. 2 followed by Rowan College of South Jersey-Cumberland, Northampton (Pennsylvania) CC and Rockingham (North Carolina) CC. Herkimer College is No. 7.

Six-time defending champion Rock Valley (Illinois) College is the No. 1 Division III softball team, receiving all eight first-place votes. Herkimer College is No. 2 followed by Onondaga CC, Brookdale (New Jersey) CC and Joliet (Illinois) Junior College. Monroe and SUNY Broome are listed under Receiving Votes.
