Dragons win at home

Emma Ruhlman scored 16 points in the second half, and solid Warren defense and free throw shooting helped the Dragons pull out a physical 40-32 region win over Erie on Tuesday at Warren Area High School.

Ruhlman had 7 of her game-high 18 in an 11-4 third quarter.

Ruhlman and point guard Riley Childress helped Warren win the free throw battle down the stretch when Erie was forced to foul. Ruhlman was 6-for-6 and Childress 4-for-6 at the line in the fourth quarter to hold off Erie.

“They’d only played Villa (Maria), and that wasn’t the same team that played Villa,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan, whose Dragons are 7-1 and 3-1 in Region 6. “(Head coach) Lance (Brown) does a nice job there. … I am more and more impressed with their athleticism. I thought our defense hunkered down.”

East (0-2 in region) trailed 32-29 in the fourth quarter when Sam Ruhlman cut off a passing lane for a steal that led to two Childress free throws.

Warren was 14-of-20 at the line, mostly down the stretch (10-of-12), to Erie’s 1-of-8.

Childress finished with 13 points, Teagan Paris 5, and Gracie Ruhlman 4 for Warren. Emma Ruhlman added seven rebounds.

Warren has been without senior Kelsey Stuart for the past couple of games, and LaVan commended her group for keeping things together.

“I never realized how much we would miss Kelsey; her calming influence and leadership,” said LaVan. “We can’t wait to get her back.”

Sammie Ruhlman and Paris Sivak had Warren’s lone field goals and 5 points each in a 20-15 junior varsity loss earlier Tuesday.
