WCYBSA holding out hope for Little League season

The Warren County Youth Baseball/Softball Association (WCYBSA) had big plans for the 2020 season.

After a seven-year separation, WCYBSA announced a new charter with Little League. The biggest change was a return to Little League all-star tournament play — from districts to sectionals to states.

At this point, the WCYBSA board of directors is just hoping to have any type of season.

“Little League International has cancelled all events from the sectional (all-star) level up to the World Series,” said WCYBSA president Jeremy Wyman after a board meeting on Tuesday. “They are allowing the individual districts and leagues to continue with regular-season play once those areas are changed to ‘green,’ according to the governor’s office.

Warren County has been listed by the Department of Health as having had one positive case of COVID-19, and that was weeks ago. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf recently announced a plan in phases of red to yellow to green of opening the state back up, and Warren County was listed as “yellow” beginning this week.

“The District 10 Administrator feels that our area will be changed to ‘green’ in the upcoming weeks,” said Wyman. “What they have proposed to the leagues within District 10 is to have a six-week regular season beginning as soon as restrictions are lifted. They are also going to plan a post-season tournament similar to the all-star experience for the District 10 leagues that could begin in mid to late June.”

If that all-star tournament play happened, the season would be over after districts.

As far as when the regular-season could begin:

“We have the option to wait for the proverbial ‘green’ light to play or cancel our season,” said Wyman. “Little League Eastern Region has asked all leagues to wait until May 31st to officially cancel their respective seasons — if that is the choice of the league board of directors. The board of directors will have a final decision at our next meeting on June 2nd. The WCYBSA board would like to wait and see if we get a green light to play in our area.”

So, what Little League is telling WCYBSA is it’s “basically waiting on Harrisburg,” said Wyman.

“In the meantime, what parents need to do is let us know if they would like to be refunded, intend to have their child play if the league is able to proceed, or if you would like to have your registration fee held for the 2021 season,” said Wyman. “The board of directors will need approximately one week to reorganize and finalize teams if we get the green light. The WCYBSA board must know by May 22nd how you would like to proceed with your registrations.

“Volunteers, you can also let us know if you still intend to be involved if we are able to have a 2020 season,” he said.

The WCYBSA board is asking parents of players and volunteers to email wcybsa.president@gmail.com with the following information: Parents name; player name or players names; whether you intend to play, you would like your registration rolled over to the 2021 season, or if you would like a refund for the 2020 season.
