Brady’s decision will set off a QB carousel

FILE - In this Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020 file photo, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady walks to the sideline after throwing an interception late in the second half of an NFL wild-card playoff football game against the Tennessee Titans in Foxborough, Mass. Nearly every one of the NFL's eight divisions has a team or teams with a quarterback quandary. With the exception of the NFC West it's easy to argue that there's a major hole behind center somewhere. Where will Tom Brady land?

It’s been the biggest question of the NFL offseason, and we’re perhaps just over a week away from finding out, with the NFL free agency period set to begin on March 18.

Rarely, if ever, has the most important position in sports dominated free agency like this. It’s also surpassed Major League Baseball’s hot stove and NBA free agency, which is the one thing they had over the NFL.

Football is now dominating every single aspect of the offseason. It’s literally a 24/7 news cycle.

Back to Brady.

His ultimate destination will set off a massive chain reaction, one that will shape the 2020 NFL season and beyond.

Here’s some of other high-profile free agent QBs, many of whom, along with their agents and a slew of other teams, will be in a holding pattern: Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota and Ryan Tannehill, not to mention guys like Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Dak Prescott, Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr, who could also be on the move, as well as the top four quarterbacks in the draft – LSU’s Joe Burrow, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, Utah State’s Jordan Love and Oregon’s Justin Herbert.

Teams in play include the Dolphins, Patriots, Bengals, Colts, Titans, Jaguars, Raiders, Chargers, Cowboys, Panthers, Bucs and Lions.

Keep in mind, this is just one of many hypothetical’s, but let’s have some fun.

1. Tom Brady and Drew Brees stay put: Brees is expected to, but no one seems to know what’s going to happen with Brady. There’s been a long list of Hall of Fame players that finish their career elsewhere, but ultimately, Brady ends up back with the Patriots.

2. The Bengals draft Joe Burrow No. 1: My preference would be Tua, but let’s not overcomplicate this.

3. The Dolphins get Tua: Whether by trading up or staying put, I think this happens. The Dolphins have done their rebuild the right way, accumulating a ton of draft picks and seemingly finding a good coach in Brian Flores. Tua, fully healthy, brings it all together.

4. The Chargers draft Utah State’s Jordan Love: They have officially moved on from Philip Rivers, and Love probably has a higher ceiling than Herbert.

5. The Colts sign Philip Rivers: This seems to make a ton of sense. Rivers still has some game left, and Jacoby Brissett was adequate, but not the long-term answer after Andrew Luck’s shocking retirement. This gives them some more time to figure out a long-term plan.

6. Dak inks a record deal with Cowboys: Let’s be honest, this is all gamesmanship at this point. Jerry’s going to pay Dak.

7. The Titans re-sign Tannehill: Probably for more money than he’s worth. They’ll look at last season’s blueprint and think it can work long-term.

8. The Raiders draft Justin Herbert: Ever since Jon Gruden came back, he’s been wanting to move on from Carr and get his hands on a young QB. He gets that chance here.

9. Carr goes to Carolina: The Panthers, under new coach Matt Rhule, are undergoing an organizational re-haul. Carr is accurate, doesn’t turn the ball over, and is a perfect fit for Rhule’s offense.

10. Cam goes to the Bears: Mitchell Trubisky isn’t working out, and Newton needs a career re-boot. Pairing him with a brilliant offensive mind in coach Matt Nagy could be a match made in heaven.

11. Teddy Bridgewater to Tampa: Winston drove coach Bruce Arians insane with all his turnovers. Bridgewater doesn’t have the arm of Winston, but he provides stability to pair with a pair of stud receivers.

12. Jameis Winston to the Steelers: This one is unlikely to happen, but would make sense for several reasons. Ben Roethlisberger is 38 and coming off a major elbow injury. I think it’s likely he comes back at full strength and still has a lot left in the tank. Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges aren’t the answer, and this gives the Steelers some insurance should the injury flare up again. Plus, there are some similarities between the two.
