District 10 proposes regions for new 2-year cycle

On Thursday, District 10 released its proposed regions for the 2020-21 and 2021-2022 cycles.

Football and basketball are not yet finalized and won’t be until the success formula process is completed. An official vote will be taken at the District 10 Committee meeting on Jan. 15.

District 10 focused on mixed-class regions in this coming cycle to prioritize travel and eliminate playoff rematches whenever possible.

Here’s a quick look at the proposed regions.

Football

Unlike boys basketball, proposed regions in football were released despite the status of Cathedral Prep, Farrell and Wilmington awaiting whether they will move up in class because of the success formula. The number of proposed regions will drop from eight to five, with more teams in each.

Eisenhower would be one of seven teams in the 10-team Region 2. Cambridge Springs, Iroquois, Maplewood, Saegertown, Union City and Cochranton would be the other 1A teams, with Northwestern, Seneca and Conneaut (Ohio) as the 2A representatives.

Warren, meanwhile, would be one of three 4A schools in the 9-team Region 4 along with General McLane and Harbor Creek. The 3A teams would be Fairview, Fort LeBoeuf, Girard, Mercyhurst Prep, North East and Corry.

One interesting thing to note here is that Region 5 teams will get two games each from 4A teams (Warren, GM, HC, Conneaut, Franklin, Meadville, Oil City). Region 5 consists of Erie High (6A), McDowell (6A) and Cathedral Prep (4A), with Prep likely to move up to 5A. The other 4A teams not in Region 4 will be joined in Region 3 by Grove City, Hickory, Sharon, Slippery Rock and Titusville.

Boys Soccer

The big thing here is that Warren and Eisenhower would be in the same region – Region 4. The 2A teams in that region joining the Knights would be Titusville, Corry, Fort LeBoeuf , North East and Franklin, with Oil City joining Warren as the other 3A rep. The Dragons would lose traditional rivals Bradford and Meadville.

Girls Soccer

Region 5 will be made up of all 2A schools – Warren, Corry, Titusville, North East, Fort LeBoeuf and Franklin. The Lady Dragons will lose Meadville, McDowell and Bradford in their region slate. Eisenhower will be in a 5-team Region 3 of all 1A schools along with Seneca, Iroquois, Maplewood and Cambridge Springs.

Volleyball

A change is coming for a Warren program that has been on quite a roll. They are in a proposed Region 5 with fellow 3A schools Conneaut, Meadville, Hickory and Grove City, making for some long road trips. The other 3A region includes General McLane, Villa, Fort LeBoeuf, along with 4A schools McDowell and Erie. Eisenhower, Youngsville and Tidioute are tabbed for Region 2 along with Cambridge Springs, Cochranton, Saegertown and Erie First Christian.

Boys Golf

Warren will stay in Region 6, staying with Cathedral Prep, Erie, McDowell, Meadville and General McLane. The only change here is that Harbor Creek would replace Fort LeBoeuf.

Girls Tennis

There will now be two regions instead of three, with Warren in Region 2 along with Mercyhurst Prep (2A), Villa (2A), Conneaut, Ohio (2A), Erie (3A), McDowell (3A) and Fairview (3A).

Boys/Girls Cross Country

Cross Country will pretty much stay as is, with Eisenhower, North East, Seneca, Union City, Youngsville, Corry, Fort LeBoeuf, Harbor Creek and Warren in a proposed Region 4.

Girls Basketball

While boys regions have yet to be proposed, the girls do have something on the table. Warren (5A) would be in Region 6 with Villa (4A), Fort LeBoeuf (4A), Harbor Creek (5A), General McLane (5A) and Corry (5A). That all is the same, but they would be joined by 6A’s Erie and McDowell, two teams that are already on Warren’s schedule this season as non-region games. In a proposed Region 2, Youngsville (1A), Tidioute (1A) and Eisenhower (2A) would be joined in by 2A’s Union City, Cochranton, Saegertown, Maplewood, Cambridge Springs and Seneca.

Wrestling

Almost no changes for the Eisenhower, Warren and Youngsville in terms of regions. Eisenhower and Youngsville, along with the rest of Region 3, is slated to remain exactly the same. The same goes for Warren in Region 5, with the lone change coming with the addition of General McLane, which is slated to bump from 2A to 3A.

Swimming

The only major change here is the Warren girls will go from 3A to 2A. Their Region 3 foes will remain the same.

Baseball

Buckle up, because Region 5 is going to be loaded. Warren joins fellow 4A schools Fort LeBoeuf, General McLane, Harbor Creek and Corry. They gain 6A schools McDowell and Erie, as well as Cathedral Prep in 4A. The Dragons face those teams in non-region games anyway, so the actual schedule won’t significantly change. Eisenhower (2A) and Youngsville 1A, will be part of Region 3, which will also include Maplewood (1A), Saegertown (1A), Cochranton (1A), Rocky Grove (1A), as well as Iroquois (2A), Union City (2A) and Cambridge Springs (2A).

Softball

Another sport that will go from eight regions to five. Warren now has 6A schools Erie and McDowell in a proposed Region 5, along with fellow 4A’s Meadville, Conneaut, Villa, General McLane and LeBoeuf. Eisenhower and Youngsville will be in Region 2, along with fellow 1A’s Cambridge Springs, Cochranton, Saegertown and Rocky Grove and 2A’s Union City and Maplewood.

Boys Tennis

Here District 10 will go from four regions to two, with Warren in Region 1 with fellow 2A’s Greenville, Grove City, Hickory, Kennedy Catholic, Sharon, Titusville, Rocky Grove and Oil City.

Boys/Girls Track and Field

No changes here, as Region 3 will consist of Warren, Corry, Oil City, Franklin and Meadville, while Region 4 will feature Eisenhower, Youngsville, Titusville, Seneca and Union City.
