Harbor Creek edges Warren for Region 4 girls title; Dragons, Knights turn in a number of strong performances

Eisenhower’s Alex Hummel raced to a fourth place finish against Warren and Harbor Creek at the Warren State Hospital grounds on Wednesday.

The Warren girls cross country team came oh so close to a Region 4 title on Wednesday, but was thwarted by rival Harbor Creek.

Both 6-0 in the region coming into the meet, the Huskies edged the Dragons by a single point, 27-28, to take the crown.

It was a perfect day for a meet between the Dragons, Huskies and Eisenhower Knights, and featured a number of strong performances across the board.

Harbor Creek standout Madeline Curtis won the girls race in 20:09, but Warren took the next three spots thanks to Katie Beyer, Naomi Hahn and Shyann Rulander. The Huskies depth showed, however, as they took spots four through eight to secure the team victory.

“That wraps up our regular season,” said Warren coach Kevin Dustin. “Both girls and boys teams finish 7-1. It’s tough to lose to the Harbor Creek girls by one point with the region championship on the line, but all we can do is look forward to the District Championships. Hoping to get a few kids through to the State Championships.”

Warren’s Katie Beyer had a strong race, finishing second against Harbor Creek and Eisenhower at the Warren State Hospital grounds on Wednesday.

Eisenhower’s Madison Cathcart led the Lady Knights with a 13th place finish (23:53), followed by Tyson Morrison and Jonathan Abadie

The boys race saw the Dragons edge the Knights by a narrow margin, 27-29. Both teams were victorious over Harbor Creek.

A strong top five was led by Warren’s Devon Navaroli, who won with a time of 17:29. He was followed by Harbor Creek’s Logan Byerly, fellow Dragon Graham Carr and Eisenhower’s Alex Hummel and Ethan Kellogg.

“A couple of the girls, Lindsay Finch and Julia Haight, had their season-best times,” said Eisenhower coach Darlene Beach. “On the boys side, one of their goals was to be competitive in the region, and they did that all season. I’m pleased with the kids and how they ran today. Ethan Kellogg is coming back from injury and getting stronger each race. Jonathan Abadie had one of his best races. Those guys in the middle did really well. Hunter Gourley also broke into the top five for the first time.”
