District 10 Game of the Week: Sharpsville at Sharon

As the season approaches the halfway point, only a pair of District 10 teams remain undefeated (Farrell and Mercyhurst Prep). Fourteen teams have only lost once this year, and one of those 14 was handed its first loss just a week ago.

Somewhat surprisingly, last week’s Times Observer District 10 Game of the Week turned into a defensive battle. General McLane pumped the breaks on Oil City’s Christian Cole “limiting” him to 193 yards on 23 carries-the first time Cole has finished with fewer than 260 rushing yards this season-in a 17-12 win. More importantly, the Lancers held Cole to only a single touchdown.

With Cole somewhat contained, General McLane was able to get its own ground game going. Ben Howe-Jones rushed for 244 yards on 25 carries and scored twice in the Lancers win.

This week’s D-10 GoTW features a crossover game between Regions 4 and 5 as Sharpsville travels to Tiger Stadium for a date with Sharon.

The Blue Devils and Tigers each enter the game with 3-1 records. Sharpsville has outscored opponents 163-70 this season, while Sharon holds a 132-105 advantage.

Nick Alexander powers the Blue Devil offense. The senior signal caller is 42-76 on the year for 734 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions. Luke Levis has been Alexander’s favorite target, hauling in 15 receptions for 271 yards and three touchdowns.

On the ground, Kobe Joseph leads the way with 360 rushing yards on 30 carries with seven scores.

When Sharon has the ball, Lane Voytik isn’t hesitant to air it out. Voytik has attempted the most passes in D-10 (109). He’s completed 67 for 793 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. C.J. Parchman is third in the district with 355 receiving yards, on 20 receptions with four touchdowns.

The Tigers also sport a strong ground game as Jordan Wilson is fifth in D-10 with 571 yards. He also has seven rushing touchdowns on the year.

Both teams will assuredly figure into their respective region title races, but for this crossover game it looks like the home team has the edge.

OUR PREDICTION: Sharon 35, Sharpsville 31
