Brookville sophomore quarterback Jack Krug threw for a school record 555 yards and 8 touchdowns in Brookville's 69-60 win over Bradford on Friday.

Football season got underway across Pennsylvania on Friday, and District 9 provided us with plenty of exciting action.

Here’s a look at some of the most noteworthy performances.

Get well soon, Matt

Sheffield quarterback and linebacker Matt Dunham suffered a serious leg injury in the Wolverines’ opener against Smethport on Saturday.

Dunham, who coach Chris Korbar has described as a ‘leader by example,’ went down in the first quarter against the Hubbers.

I think I speak for everyone in wishing a speedy recovery for Matt, who will still be leader for the Wolverines from the sideline.

D-9 Game of the Week lives up to the billing … and then some

Bradford at Brookville was the Times Observer’s District 9 Game of the Week, and it exceeded all possible expectations. Behind a record-setting performance from sophomore quarterback Jack Krug, the Raiders outlasted the Owls 69-60 in a game that featured 1,374 yards of total offense.

Krug accounted for 693 yards of total offense and nine touchdowns, including 30-of-50 passing for a school-record 555 yards and a school-record eight passing touchdowns.

He accomplished all this despite being with out his top receiver, Bryan Dworek, who missed the game with an ankle injury. Cabe Park stepped up big time in his stead, setting a school record for receiving touchdowns (5), receptions (15) and receiving yards (290).

Bradford, meanwhile, ran for 522 yards on the ground, led by Donny Patttison, who carried 14 times for 204 yards and three scores. He also scored on a 36-yard pass from Nathan Blauser.

Pattison was one of three Owls to eclipse 100 yards on the ground – Derek Sunafrank had 179 and Jaron Ambrose 129.

Moniteau snaps Kane’s regular season winning streak

In what was the most surprising result in the first week of action, Moniteau upended Kane, 14-13.

The win snapped the Wolves’ 31-game regular season winning streak dating back to 2014. The last regular season loss for Kane came at the hands of Elk County Catholic on Oct. 17, 2014.

Down 14-7 with 1:18 left to play, Kane blocked a Moniteau field goal attempt and Teddy Race went 80 yards for a touchdown to get the Wolves within one, but Moniteau stopped the 2-point conversion to hang on for the win.

Cody Wise ran for 160 yards on 15 carries for Moniteau, including a 60-yard touchdown to open the second half..

surprises Curwensville

Curwensville, the preseason Coaches Poll favorite in the D-9 Small School South, was upended by the Crusaders, 34-14. Stephen Bobby had a big game for the Crusaders, carrying the ball 26 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns. Mason McAllister had 102 yards passing and a pair of scores as well.

Clearfield dominates DuBois

Isaac Rumery threw for 118 yards and a touchdown and had 84 yards rushing and a pair of scores as Clearfield beat DuBois, 28-3.

DuBois’ Eric Schneider was 12-of-19 passing for 97 yards and a score.
