Post 135’s offense stymied in setback to Wesleyville

Ben Berdine had a hit and pitched two scoreless innings in Post 135's 4-1 loss to Wesleyville on Wednesday.

ARBOR CREEK – Two days after scoring 17 runs, Post 135’s bats were held in check by Wesleyville.

Post 135 scored a a run on two hits in the first inning, but was held without a hit over the final six frames in a 4-1 loss on Wednesday at Harbor Creek Community Park in the district tournament.

“We weren’t able to get much going with the bats tonight,” said Post 135 coach Jeff Berdine.

The lone inning they did began with a James Swanson hit by pitch. Swanson stole second and advanced to third on Ben Berdine’s single. Berdine drew a throw on a steal attempt that went into center field, allowing Swanson to score the game’s first run. Hunter Loomis singled and stole second, putting runners on second and third, but Wesleyville pitcher Austin Vaughn was able to retire Ethan Wilson and Dylan Maeder to limit the damage.

That proved to be critical, as Wesleyville struck for a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings off Post 135 starter Tyler Gustafson.

Brandon Perez reached on a fielder’s choice, which was followed by a hit by pitch, single and two errors to do the damage in the second and Wesleyville got two more runs in the fourth on an RBI groundout and an RBI double off the bat of Joey Amann.

Two of the four runs surrendered by Gustafson were unearned, and he allowed just four hits in his four innings of work.

Vaughn went five innings and gave way to Matthew Dorsch, who picked up the save with a pair of scoreless innings.

Berdine relieved Gustafson in the fifth, tossing two scoreless innings of his own, allowing one hit.

Post 135 was kept off the base paths by Vaughn in the second and third innings, and had single baserunners in the fourth (hit by pitch), fifth (walk), sixth (walk) and seventh (walk).

Post 135 is still alive and will host Corry today at 6 p.m. at Legion Field.
