Mid-Atlantic Red Sox earn three wins in two days

Warren's Austyn Cummings had a big weekend for the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox.

PHILIPPI, W. Va. – The Red Sox went 3-1 over the weekend, losing their first game to the Virginia Seminoles, followed by wins over MSI Leitzel, Next Level Athletics and Beaver Valley 17 U to earn their spot in the finals of the Team Showcase in West Virginia at 10 a.m. on Monday.

The Red Sox had just two hits in their opener on Saturday, but their offense was locked in during their three remaining games of the weekend.

Red Sox 5, MSI Leitzel 4

Warren’s Aidan Morrison walked with one to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth, and Riley Jackson’s RBI groundout brought in the game-winning run.

MSI took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Red Sox scored two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Morrison hit a double in the frame.

Warren’s Austyn Cummings was also 1-for-3 with a run scored, while St. John’s commit Marcus Lee Sang also had an RBI.

Next Level Athletics 2

Cummings had a big game in Sunday’s opener, going 3-for-3 with four RBI as the Red Sox eased past Next Level Athletics. Jack Ryan (Walt Whitman) also had a big game for the winners, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored.

The Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Ryan’s first double and an RBI single from Cummings, and broke the game open in the fourth, scoring six runs.

Ryan hit a bases clearing double in the inning, and after a walk and a hit-by-pitch, Cummings singled in Jacob Ference (Linganore, Md.).

Blake Forney (Greencaste-Antrim/Greencastle, Pa.) was solid on the mound, allowing just one earned run and striking out three in his five innings of work.

Red Sox 11,

Beaver Valley 17U 10

The Red Sox dug themselves a huge hole in this one, trailing 10-1 going into the bottom of the fourth, but scored six runs in that inning and for more in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win, which came on Justin Taylor’s (Williamsport) run-scoring single.

Ryan had three RBIs in the game, while Jackson and Brady Drawbaugh (Woodgrove H.S./Lovetsville, Va.) had two RBI each.

Cummings was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while Morrison was behind the plate and went 0-for-3.
