Warren County grads excelling in collegiate ranks in January

Warren County athletes have been shining on the collegiate level in January.

Here’s a look at how a few of the standouts are doing.

Suppa taking on bigger

role for Oberlin

Last Wednesday in a win against Denison, Warren Area High School graduate Evan Suppa started and played 26 minutes and had five points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals and he hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left to put the game away for Oberlin.

On Saturday, Oberlin squared off with Ohio Wesleyan. He started that game as well and due to some foul trouble by others he played 33 minutes and had 11 points and five rebounds in a close loss to a team that has been in the top 25 nationally this season.

Grinnen hitting her

stride for Behrend

Lacey Grinnen, a 2016 Warren Area High School graduate, is hitting her stride as Penn State Behrend’s Swimming and Diving team is preparing for the post season.

Against Washington and Jefferson College on Jan. 13, she touched first (6:07.19) in the 500 freestyle. She was second in the 1000 freestyle (12:31.45), finishing less than a second shy of first. Grinnen also came in third in the 200 free (2:24.41).

In a tri meet against Pitt-Bradford and Wells College on Jan. 20, she was a double winner in the distance events. She won the 1000 freestyle by a two-minute margin (12:41.07) and then captured the 500 free (6:08.03), helping the Lady Lions to a 108-39 victory over Pitt-Bradford and a 107-62 victory over Wells College.

On Jan. 27, Grinnen won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 12:08.82 and again finishing less than a second shy of first place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:50.14 helping her team to a 131-75 victory over Penn State Altoona.

The Lady Lions compete against Malone University on February 2 and St. Vincent College on Feb. 3. They will then host the AMCC Championship February 14 – 17.

Hahn playing key role for nationally ranked Vulcans

Warren Area High School graduate D.J. Hahn had two points and three rebounds in the Vulcans 61-41 win over Slippery Rock on Saturday.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 18-3 overall behind a 13-2 mark in league action. Cal U also moved into first place in the divisional standings by a half-game, as IUP suffered a loss at Mercyhurst and Edinboro was idle on Saturday.

On the season, Hahn is averaging 8.4 ppg. and 4.0 rpg and also leads the team with 25 made 3s.

Isenberg named Pitt-Bradford Female Athlete of the Week

Junior Jennifer Isenberg of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women’s basketball team has been named a Pitt-Bradford Athlete of the Week for her performance during the period of Jan. 22-28.

The Sheffield High graduate put together a huge week to lead the Panthers to wins in both of their games this week, nearly averaging a double-double of 17.5 points per game and 9.5 boards per game.

Her stellar week was highlighted by a career night of 25 points and 14 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season Wednesday against Alfred State. She couldn’t miss, going 12-17 from the floor Wednesday while also grabbing five steals.

She also scored 10 points Saturday to help the Panthers complete the season sweep of Franciscan.

On the week, she shot 54.8 percent from the floor and while blocking three shots on the defensive side of the ball.

Her strong play has guided the Panthers to their current three-game winning streak, and the team has won six of its last seven games.
