Ei, Dragons capture huge road win at General McLane

EDINBORO – A day after their Lady Dragon counterparts got a signature road win, the Warren boys went out and got one of their own.

Behind a career-high 32 points from junior Caleb Ei, the Dragons outscored General McLane 28-17 in the fourth quarter en route to a 68-55 Region 6 victory.

It was a measure of revenge for Warren, as the Lancers had a 10-point win over the Dragons on Jan. 6 and it was a far cry from their performance in a 55-50 home loss to Fort LeBoeuf last Friday.

“What a difference a couple of days makes,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “This game mirrored the game in Warren, just in the other direction. We got in early foul trouble at home, they did tonight with Manchester and Schreiber. We struggled to knock down shots the first game and they did early tonight. The games were very similar.”

Ei saved his best for last, scoring 15 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter, including 7 of 8 from the free throw line. As a team, the Dragons (8-8 overall, 5-3 Region 6) were 14 of 16 in the final eight minutes.

McLane (10-7, 5-2), which knocked down 11 3s in the game, buried four in the second quarter to take a 26-25 lead into halftime.

Bradley Yoder and Jack Parker did most of the damage for the Lancers from distance, drilling four each.

The Dragons, however, did a tremendous job defensively on GM’s two leading scorers, Seth Myers and Josh Schreiber.

Myers, who scored 27 points in the first meeting, had just 11 on Tuesday, while Schreiber, the leading scorer at 16.1 ppg., was held scoreless in his return from a minor injury.

Point guard Griffin Suppa played a vital role in the second half for Warren, notching 10 of his 14 points, while Aidan Morrison scored all eight of his points in the second half and was a terror on the boards, reaching double figures.

“I thought we played a really good second half,” Berdine said. “We did a good job of realizing that it was going to take a full 32 minutes. They tried to press us and we did a good job of not turning the ball over.”

Morrison and Suppa combined for nine assists and Devin McMeans notched a pair of steals.

With Corry’s upset win over Harbor Creek, both HC and GM remain tied atop Region 6 at 5-2 with the Dragons 1/2 game back at 5-3.

The Dragons will look to keep the momentum going against a pair of District 9 foes, as they travel to St. Marys on Saturday and follow that up with a home date against state-ranked and unbeaten Ridgway on Tuesday.
