Dragons earn Region 6 road win over Fort LeBoeuf

Jake Kupchella scored 15 points as the Dragons earned a 56-46 road win over Fort LeBoeuf.

WATERFORD – Colby Johnson kept Warren in the game at Fort LeBoeuf in the first half with his hot shooting, and his teammates got in on the act in the second.

Johnson scored all 13 of his points in the first, while Jake Kupchella had a game-high 15 as the Dragons used an impressive second half to earn a key Region 6 road win over Fort LeBoeuf on Wednesday, 56-46.

“Colby knocked down some big 3’s and had a couple runners in the paint to keep us in the game,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “They (Fort LeBoeuf) did a good job on the offensive glass in the first half.”

The Bison were also the beneficiary of early foul trouble to Warren’s Caleb Ei, who picked up two fouls in the first quarter and spent most of the first half on the bench.

“That was the difference in the first half,” noted Berdine of Ei’s foul trouble.

Brandon Kupniewski scored eight of his team-high 11 points in the first half to help stake LeBoeuf to a 27-26 lead.

The Dragons (5-4 overall, 2-0 Region 6) went on a 15-7 run in the third quarter to take command and the trio of Kupchella, Griffin Suppa and Ei went 8-of-9 from the line in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

LeBoeuf played zone for much of the first half, but had to switch to man in the second and the Dragons were able to use their athleticism to their advantage.

“The second half we got stops and once they had to come out of their zone and play man, they struggled to keep us in front,” Berdine said.

Irvin Comic scored 10 points in the game, but Berdine noted the ‘great defense’ down the stretch on him by junior guard Devin McMeans.

Kupchella had six rebounds, four assists and two steals in addition to his 15 points, while Aidan Morrison pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, Suppa dished out seven assists and McMeans had a pair of steals.

The Dragons have another big Region 6 game on Friday when they host General McLane.

“I thought LeBoeuf, McLane and us were the three teams that had the most coming back,” Berdine said. “Getting this win on the road early is huge for us.”
