Quartet of WAHS grads shining in college ranks

Ashley Barker poses with the ECAC trophy for Westminster.

Barker helps Westminster to ECAC title

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Westminster College volleyball team won the 2017 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Volleyball Championship, following a 3-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Sunday afternoon, with WAHS grad Ashley Barker playing a key role.

The ECAC Championship marked the first for the Titans as an NCAA Division III member. Westminster won the ECAC Championship as Division II members in 2001; current assistant coach Shannon Liposky was the MVP.

Tied 7-7 in the first set, Westminster pulled away with a 9-0 lead and led 16-7. Fairleigh Dickinson (27-9) got within four points of Westminster’s lead (22-18), but the Titans won the set, 25-19. The Devils were up, 16-14, in the second set. Westminster got back in front, 19-18, and outscored the Devils 6-1 for the remainder of the set for a 25-19 set two win. The Titans went up 8-3 in the third set and eventually led 19-9. Westminster sealed the set, the match, and the ECAC Championship after junior Ashley Barker found senior Kendell Dickson for the kill, winning 25-13.

Junior Shanna Daniels earned a team-high 14 assists, while junior Ashley Barker totaled 12. Barker added nine digs. Yoho and DeGeorge each had a service ace. Yoho had a match-high seven blocks, while sophomore Haley Farmerie (Manor, PA / Greensburg Central Catholic) had four.

The Titans end the season 30-6 overall, becoming only the third team in school history to win at least 30 matches in a single season; they are the first team to have least 30 wins since 1997.
