Warren tops OC; Sheffield goes 5 with Bradford

OIL CITY – Warren won its second consecutive match to start the season, besting Oil City in three sets – 25-12, 25-16 and 25-22.

“We had good ball control and had a lot of attacks which is what we’re trying to do, we just have to cut out a few mental errors but we’re on the right track.”

Leading the way were Celia Chase (12 kills, 2 aces), Grace Wortman (5 kills, 3 aces) Ellie Lobdell (10 kills, 2 digs, 2 assists, 1 block), Jessie Sweigart (1 kill), Lydia Latimer (10 kills, 1 block), Jordan Sitler (1 kill, 1 assist), Kelsey Dilks (2 aces, 1 dig), Lex Nyquist (1 ace, 3 digs, 36 assists, 1 kill) and Emily Hannak (1 kill).

The JV team won 25-13, 25-11. The team had 17 aces. Hannah Shattuck had four digs and Isabella Shingler three digs.

The JV team will hosts its tournament at the Warren Area Elementary Center on Saturday and have their official home opener on Tuesday against Meadville.

BRADFORD 3, SHEFFIELD 2

Sheffield went toe-to-toe with District 9 powerhouse Bradford on Thursday, winning the first two games before ultimately falling in a 5-set thriller – 25-23, 25-18, 18-25, 20-25, 7-15.

“Defensively they were just all over the place,” Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay said of her team. “They had a lot of kills, were consistent and played their hearts out tonight.”

Leading the way were Mya Grubbs (11 service points, 15 digs, 28 assists), Eliza Davidson (20 digs, 7 kills), Laurel Connolly (6 kills, 2 blocks), Lexi Lyon (16 kills, 7 blocks), Taya Bailey (11 service points, 17 digs).

“They’re just starting to have some confidence in themselves,” Lemay said. “We worked a lot in practice on serving issues and our serve-receive was much better tonight.”
