General McLane edges Warren in overtime, 2-1

Paige Johnson sends in a corner kick for Warren during a match against General McLane at War Memorial Field, Monday, Sept. 11, 2017. The Lancers defeated the Dragons, 2-1, in overtime.

Life is full of choices.

Sometimes the consequesnces of those choices are good, sometimes they are . . . not so good.

Warren girls soccer coach Jeremy Bickling made the choice to play extra time instead of walking away with a 1-1 tie against General McLane Monday.

McLane’s Hannah McDermott made the Dragons pay for that choice late in the first extra time period as she was able to push a bouncing ball just inside the goal post to give the visiting Lancers a 2-1 win.

“I made the choice to go to extra time,” Bickling said. “I wanted us to go out and battle.”

Warren’s Madeline Fadale races General McLane’s Bailey Ward to the ball during their match at War Memorial Field, Monday, Sept. 11, 2017. The Lancers topped the Dragons, 2-1, in overtime.

He didn’t regret making that choice because “the girls will learn more” by playing more and since it was a non-region game the risk-reward was too great to pass up.

The Lancers got on the board early in the first half. Warren (3-2) was pressuring in the offensive zone when the Lancers created a turnover that lead to breakaway. Junior forward Kaley Berger twisted the ball past Dragon junior keeper Abby Arnold to put McLane up 1-0 just 8:32 into the match.

The Dragons continued applying pressure throughought the half, but just couldn’t solve McLane sophomore keeper Christine Patterson.

“I was happy with our looks,” Bickling said. “I think they have an outstanding keeper and she made it difficult to get good looks or anything that wasn’t right at her.”

Berger nearly got the Lancers a two-goal advantage 31 minutes in. She got past the Dragon defense with the ball in her sights, but Arnold was just able to get to the ball before Berger could get a shot off, keeping it 1-0.

Warren’s Lexie Grubbs winds up for a shot against General McLane during their match at War Memorial Field, Monday, Sept. 11, 2017. Grubbs scored Warren’s only goal in a 2-1 overtime loss.

Warren didn’t waste any time knotting things up in the second half. Kyliegh Wilson got the ball outside the right goal post and found Lexie Grubbs in front. Grubbs wound up from 15 yards and tucked the ball past Patterson on the short side.

“Lexie had a lot of hustle out there,” Bickling said.

Neither team generated many quality chances until the final 10 minutes of the half. General McLane began applying pressure, but Arnold and the defense was up to the challenge.

“Shelby Smith and Kelsey Fadale did a really good job on defense,” Bickling said.

The Dragons stepped up the pressure in the final five minutes. Grubbs nearly got the game-winner in regulation. The ball was loose and rolling in front of the goal mouth. Grubbs came in and slid to the ball, but she couldn’t get enough of her foot on it and it would not go.

McDermott’s goal came at 7:07 of extra time. McLane got the ball deep in the zone and centered it from the left corner. the ball looked like it would roll harmlessly past the goal mouth, but McDermott was able to push it in just before Arnold could get to the corner.

Bickling said there were lessons his team could take into future contests.

“Our midfield worked a lot today, they were working to create and couldn’t get a lot of scoring opportunities,” he said.

“We’ll also look more at our communication and mental focus.”

The Dragons will look to apply those lessons during the Bucktail Tournament Thursday and Friday at St Marys.
