Sheffield falls to Curwensville

Kolten Johnson returns one of many onside kicks by the Golden Tide in their 56-8 win over the Wolverines.

CURWENSVILLE – A big first half by Golden Tide quarterback Bryce Timko helped lead Curwensville to a 56-8 win over visiting Sheffield.

The Wolverines kept the Tide scoreless for just half of the first quarter, until Timko connected with Nick Stewart for a 20-yard touchdown. With the conversion, Curwensville jumped out in front 8-0 and never looked back.

“Again, it’s the wheels,” said Sheffield head coach Dave Fitch, referencing a previous post-game statement about the wheels falling off. “We don’t believe in ourselves yet. We don’t believe that we can come back when we get a little adversity. We did battle the first eight or nine minutes of the game, but again it’s our Achilles heel, we just can’t seem to pull ourselves up and bounce back.”

Following a Stewart 20-yard score, Timko unloaded on the Wolverines in the second quarter, wasting no time rushing in for a 4-yard touchdown. Ahead 22-0 Curwensville recovered the ensuing kickoff at the Wolverines 22. The Golden Tide quarterback turned the aggressive special teams play into another touchdown, when he connected with Josh Terry for a 22-yard touchdown.

Timko would go on to add two more scores in the half to finish 9-of-14 for 186 yards and five touchdowns.

The Sheffield defense works to stop Curwensville's Nick Stewart.

Sheffield’s loan spark came early in the fourth quarter, down 56-0, when Josh Agudio, who was filling in for the missing Kevin Evans, busted loose a 65-yard touchdown to finally get the Wolverines on the board. Agudio finished strong with 158 yards on 21 carries.

“Josh ran real well,” said Fitch. “And he’ll get better. But I can’t say enough about having people in three, or four, or five positions tonight. We have the numbers, but we are thin on varsity ready players. Walker (Kyler) played a couple positions. Matt (Dunham) played a couple.”

Despite the loss, Fitch still found positives from the game that he hopes carries forward with the team as then come closer to AML North play.

“I give our kids a lot of credit,” said Fitch. “They played down at times, but they didn’t mentally get down. We kept our heads that way. We just kind of felt defeated before we took the field. But we’ll work on that.”

Meanwhile, with the loss Sheffield falls to 0-3 and will travel to face their last AML South opponent of the regular season, the Ridgway Elkers, next Friday.
