Combined no-no, big bats carry Blair to win in opener

Blair’s Colby Johnson throws a pitch during the second inning of a game against Youngsville Post 658 at Davis Street Field, Monday. Johnson, Brady Blair and Chris White threw a combined no-hitter as Blair won 16-0.

Blair’s Colby Johnson, Brady Blair and Chris White threw a combined no-hitter and the offense had big first and fourth innings as Blair cruised to a 16-0 season opening win against Youngsville Post 658 Monday.

“We played well,” said Blair coach Jeff White. “It was a great first outing.”

Blair’s offense got to 658’s Sam Hoover early, scoring eight first inning runs. Nate Betts drew a lead-off walk, stole second and scored on Johnson’s single. Aidan Morrison followed with a ground rule double, scoring Johnson. Morrison was caught stealing third just before Mitch Grosch drilled a ball to right for a triple.

Matt Leonard followed with a double, scoring on Evan Tremblay’s single. Blair hit the second triple of the inning to score Tremblay, then came around on Ryan Rafalski’s single. Two batters later, Betts doubled home Rafalski and Tanner Leichtenberger with his second at-bat of the inning.

“We had lots of good at bats,” White said.

Youngsville Post 658 second baseman Curt Darling throws to first to record an out during a Senior Legion game against Blair at Davis Street Field, Monday, June 5, 2017. Blair rolled to a 16-0 win.

The eight runs would be more than enough.

Johnson issued a lead-off walk to Zane Alexander, but set down the next five batters he faced before giving way to Blair in the third inning. Blair struck out the side in the third.

Betts led off the 7-run fourth with a single and advanced to second when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Johnson reached on an error and Morrison grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Betts. Grosch grounded into a fielder’s choice and Leonard singled before Tremblay singled, scoring Morrison and Grosch.

Back-to-back doubles by White and Blair scored three more. Betts, again getting a second at-bat in a single inning, closed out the scoring with an RBI single.

Post 658 threatened in the bottom of the inning as Blair walked the bases loaded. An infield fly and strikeout ended the threat. White issued a lead-off walk in the fifth, started a 1-6-3 double play, walked the next batter before getting a lineout to end the game.

Youngsville Post 658 third baseman Levi Wright applies a tag to Blair’s Evan Tremblay during a Senior Legion game at Davis Street Field, Monday, June 5, 2017. Tremblay, safe on the play, scored three times and drove in another three runs to help lead Blair to a 16-0 win.

“Colby is a strike throwing machine,” White said. “When Blair is throwing strikes he’s tough to hit and Chris just does his job.”

Tremblay finished with four hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Blair and Betts each finished with two RBI and two runs scored.

Youngsville travels to Old Legion Field Wednesday to take on Post 135. Blair is at Corry Thursday.
