Warren softball triumphs again

Warren’s Maddie Loutzenhiser went 2-for-3 in Tuesday’s win over Harbor Creek.

HARBORCREEK — Warren won its second game in as many games, 7-4, at Harbor Creek on Tuesday.

A three-run win is quite a run differential these days in Region 6, and it was a playoff-type atmosphere less than a week away from the start of the District 10 4A playoffs.

Warren jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with consecutive hits from Maddie Loutzenhiser and Megan Wortman and an RBI groundout from Kiersten Hoffman. Gracie Wood knocked in the second run of the inning for Warren (12-5 overall and 7-5 in the region).

HarborCreek scored an unearned run in the first before Celia Chase led off the second with a hit for Warren. Alexis Nyquist tripled her home with two outs for a 3-1 lead.

Warren upped the lead to 4-1 with Hoffman’s leadoff double in the third, and an RBI hit by Ellie Lobdell.

Two walks and two hits helped the Huskies cut the lead to 4-3, and Ellie Lobdell made way for Julia Lobdell in the fourth inning. Julia Lobdell threw three scoreless innings, including stranding a leadoff triple in the sixth with three pop fly outs.

In the meantime, Warren scored three times in the top of the sixth. Chase doubled and Julia Lobdell’s bunt single moved her to third to set up Nyquist’s sacrifice fly. Loutzenhiser’s double moved Lobdell to third and, with two outs, Hoffman singled both home for a 7-3 lead.

Julia Lobdell loaded the bases without an out to start the bottom of the seventh, but Ellie Lobdell then reentered. She induced a short fly to center field that Gracie Wood dove and caught, setting up a double play at third base. After a runner scored, the game ended with Hoffman snaring a line drive at third base.

“I was proud of the teamwork,” said Warren coach Jon Sitler. “We limited mistakes, and teammates picked each other up — like good teams do.”

Ellie Lobdell struck out four in four innings, and Julia Lobdell allowed one earned run over three innings.

Nyquist, Loutzenhiser, Wortman, Hoffman and Chase had two hits each for Warren, which visits General McLane on Wednesday.
