Warren drops 10-inning thriller with Corry

Warren’s Celia Chase slides safely into third base during Monday’s Region 6 contest against Corry.

For the second time this season, Warren played a game that went 10 innings long. Unlike the first one, however, Monday’s game with Corry didn’t have the outcome they desired.

The win was the second for Corry over Warren this season in the ultra-competitive Region 6, 6-5.

With the International Tiebreaker Rule in effect, Brooke Joncas belted an RBI double to give Corry a 5-4 lead and she came in to score on Emily Sonntag’s single that extended the lead to two.

Warren (10-3 overall, 5-3 Region 6) didn’t go down without a fight, as Alexis Nyquist’s RBI single brought in Grace Wortman with two outs to trim the margin to one, 6-5. Pitcher Megan Dennis beared down, however, and was able to get Maddie Loutzenhiser on a grounder to short to end it.

Warren actually held a 1-run lead going into the seventh, but Haley Kurelowech singled and came around to score on a ground ball that wasn’t fielded cleanly to tie it up at 4-4.

Warren’s Alexis Nyquist fields a ball at shortstop during Monday’s game against Corry.

The Lady Dragons had a chance to end the game in regulation, but Dennis once again worked her way out of trouble, getting Wortman to pop up with the bases loaded and two out.

“We will have to have a short-term memory with another region game at Titusville on Tuesday,” said Warren coach Jon Sitler. “We could dwell on the opportunities we had to win today, or we can use this as motivation to get better. I choose the latter.”

Each team had a big inning – Corry in the first and Warren in the fifth.

The Beavers (6-4, 5-4) were the beneficiary of a pair of Warren errors and RBI from Joncas, Sonntag and Dennis gave them a 3-0 lead.

Warren’s bats were quiet early, but they came alive in the fifth. Celia Chase led off the inning with a single and came around to score on Nyquist’s RBI single. Megan Wortman followed with an RBI on an error and, after a walk to Kiersten Hoffman, Ellie Lobdell and Grace Wortman both drew free passes with the bases loaded to give the Lady Dragons a 4-3 lead.

The Lady Dragons look to bounce back against Titusville on Tuesday.
