Lady Knights fall in non-region contest

Eisenhower’s Lydia Giannini fights for possession during Monday’s game against Cranberry.

Young teams go through growing pains, especially early in the season. Such was the case on Monday as Eisenhower dropped a 41-12 decision to District 9 foe Cranberry.

It was a tough night on the offensive end for the Lady Knights, as they were hampered by turnovers.

“Being as young as we are, sometimes the girls get in a hurry,” said Eisenhower coach Mike Logue. “John Wooden said ‘don’t hurry, but be quick,’ and we tend to hurry a little too much.”

Kirsten Baran nailed a jumper on the opening possession of the game to give the Lady Knights a 2-0 advantage, but that was the only shot they hit until Payton Mineweaser’s jumper with 2:13 left in the second quarter.

Cranberry also struggled to score in the early game, but got it going in the second quarter to extend its lead to nine, 16-7 at halftime.

The Lady Berries (5-1) scored 14 of the first 16 second half points to take control of the game.

“When things aren’t going our way, we’re too young and not yet able to improvise,” Logue said. “With a young group, you talk about getting better each game. You’re going to see the good and the bad and there’s going to be growing pains along the way. We only had 11 girls dressed tonight, so between JV and varsity, we had some girls get a lot of minutes.”

Erin Merryman had 14 points and Carley Schreck 13 to pace Cranberry.

For Eisenhower (1-4), Baran grabbed seven rebounds and had three blocks, while Mineweaser had four steals.

“We’ll have two days of practice and then a region game against Union City,” Logue added. “We’re going to work hard and be ready.”
