Lions impressive in 20-point win

A huge second quarter was all it took for Warren County Christian School to grab a win over CCSI on Monday, as the Lions exploded for 20 points en route to a 44-24 New Penn Christian Conference victory on their home court.

“I was very happy with our senior leadership,” said WCCS coach Tom Jones. “They were hitting the open man – we missed a lot of easy shots but they were still doing a good job of moving the ball … They did a good job executing the things that I asked them to. We were moving the ball well on offense and they attacked the weak spots of the defense.”

After a slow start on the offensive end for both teams, the Lions’ most experienced varsity players – Erik Sorensen and Tommy Jones- stepped up to score a combined 13 points in the second quarter. Danny Jones added four points of his own to the mix including a turnaround jumper at the buzzer that gave WCCS a 25-8 lead going into the half.

Sorensen was able to provide enough of a spark to hold off CCSI in the second half, driving to the basket seemingly at will on his way to a game-high 15 points. Tommy Jones finished with nine points while Josh Jones added eight.

Andrew Gillette led CCSI in the loss with 12 points.

With just four teams headed to the New Penn Christian Conference Tournament on the boys side, Warren County Christian is likely to get the second seed at 2-2 and could host a first-round game on Friday, Feb. 19.

The tournament championship game will be Saturday, Feb. 20 at Erie First Christian Academy.
