Big win for Lions

The Lady Lions notched one of their best wins of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Meadville Calvary Baptist, 29-20, at Warren County Christian School.

WCCS led by four at halftime, and pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Thunder 8-1.

Calvary Baptist would score the first eight points of the fourth quarter to pull within three, but the Lions tightened up after that, going on a 7-0 run of their own and holding the Thunder to just one more point the rest of the way.

“We thought from the very beginning of the season that Meadville was the team to beat,” Lions coach Tom Jones said. “They won the tournament last year, and the last two times we’ve played them they’ve beaten us, so this is a big win for us.”

Warren County Christian didn’t even need to play at full strength to bring home the win, as the Lions played without seniors Dymphee Zortman and Caitlin McCall.

“We’re short a couple of seniors who are out with illnesses,” Jones said. “So we’re playing a lot of underclassmen and they just played disciplined, and simplified things a lot.”

Alyssa Kerr led all scorers on the night, finishing with 19 points for the Lady Lions.

“Alyssa was dominating, both on the boards and scoring,” Jones said. “But it wasn’t just her, because (her teammates) were all making great passes and playing good defense.”

The Lady Lions are back in action on Friday when they host CCSI.
