Dragons finish fifth; Lemmon and Cecco win doubles title

SHARON – The Lady Dragon tennis team completed the regular season with a fifth-place performance on Wednesday at the Buhl Park Invitational. With a field of nine teams, Hickory was the overall champion and Kennedy Catholic finished the event in second position.

“Of the entire squad of 11 Dragons, many had outstanding performances,” said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch. “Our sophomore doubles pair of Morgan Lemmon and Rachel Cecco enjoyed a flawless day on the courts” and captured first place in the Second Doubles Championship event by winning three consecutive matches. The first round saw the Dragons defeat Kennedy Catholic 8-1, then the pair from Grove City 8-1 in the semi-finals. In the finals, the Dragons squared off with Hickory and prevailed by a 10-7 score.

“Our girls were tenacious today,” said Bartsch. “Morgan covered the baseline and Rachel was over-powering at the net.”

Also scoring points for the Dragons was the senior pair of Kim Parroccini and Madalyn Harding as they won two matches in third doubles to place them into the quarterfinals. The largest event featured 19 doubles pairs. Warren defeated Oil City in the first round and then followed up with another win over Grove City. In the quarters, the Dragons fell to Greenville but scored points to advance Warren in the team scoring.

Warren’s top doubles duo of Maria Miller and Alexis Vavala score an impressive 8-5 comeback win over Kennedy Catholic to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, the Dragons fell to eventual First Doubles Champion Hickory. Team points were scored to help the Warren point standings.

All three Dragon singles players of Megan Waterfield, Phoebe Nelson and Maribeth Miller fell in their quarterfinal rounds. Freshmen Dragons Abby Buerkle and Haley Justice picked up a Third Doubles walk-over win before falling to eventual champion Hickory.

“This event affords our entire squad to contribute to the team effort,” said Warren coach John Parroccini. “Though this is a long day, our girls performed exceptionally well with good competition.”

The Dragons complete the regular season with a 5-7 record in dual match play.

“We have high hopes of outstanding postseason play in the upcoming D10 Singles Tournament, the D10 Doubles Tournament and then the D10 Team Championships in the Class AAA division.
