Smoulder first at McDowell Invite

EDINBORO-Competing as an independent, Warren senior Megan Smoulder took first overall at the McDowell Girls’ Golf Invitational Monday at Edinboro’s Culbertson Hills Golf Course.

Smoulder, who has won three of the six invites she has competed in this year, tied with McDowell’s Claire Orr with a score of 80 but won through a match of cards.

Smoulder was the only Lady Dragons’ golfer in attendance.

McDowell Blue cruised to the team title with a total score of 372, finishing ahead of Mercyhurst (393) Fort LeBoeuf (403), Reynolds and Hickory (408).

Over the weekend, Smoulder finished fifth out of 26 girls at the Midwest Prep Classic played at Peek n’ Peak.

Smoulder shot a two-round 174, just two strokes off of third place. Teammate Rachel Wilson was ninth at 186, Clancy Fyock was 17th at 211, and Katelyn Hecei 23rd at 224.

“Megan’s fifth-place finish was disappointing to her because she knows next week that would end her high school career,” said Warren coach Tom Smoulder. “However, Rachel shot where we needed her and Clancy got it done in her spot. Without a fifth player again this week, we did respectable. Next week we will have all five when it is time to get it done.”

Warren was fourth out of six as a team.

Next up for the Lady Dragons is the District 10 Class AAA Championships Friday and Saturday at Riverside Golf Course in Cambridge Springs. Saturday’s round counts as the second half of the individual competition as well as the team championship.
