Dragons win second region game in 2 days

Warren had little trouble winning its second Region 7 game in as many days with a 16-0 mercy rule victory over Girard Thursday at Old Legion Field.

The Dragons put up five runs in three separate innings and the Yellow Jackets were unable to mount any offense against senior starting pitcher Collin Fantaskey. The win improves Warren’s overall record to 4-3 with a 3-1 Region 7 mark.

“We knew (Girard) was young and a little down, but they came out and played hard,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton. “We avoided a letdown after some tough games against McLane, Prep and Harbor Creek. I’d say we’re right about where we want to be at this point in the season.”

Matt Hultquist put Warren on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning and put the game out of reach in the third with his first home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left field wall.

The Dragons continued to pile up runs until Derek Reagle connected on a bases-loaded double to end the game via mercy rule in the fourth.

Fantaskey struck out three in his three innings of work to earn the win and Jason Stanton tossed a scoreless fourth for the Dragons, who did not commit an error on defense.

Hultquist led the offensive attack, finishing 2-for-2 at the plate with five runs batted in. Todd Fasenmyer was 3-for-3, Tanner Teconchuk was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and Tanner Stanz was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. A total of eight different batters recorded hits for Warren.

The Dragons return to action after the Easter break with a non-region game at Bradford on Wednesday. The Region 7 schedule resumes next Friday on the road at Fort LeBoeuf.

Warren’s junior varsity team is 6-0-1 on the season after Jimmy Vile and Sage Anderson combined to pitch a five-inning perfect game Thursday, 10-0 over Girard. Vile struck out seven in three perfect innings, and Anderson four in two innings.

Collin DeLattre had three hits in the win.

Eisenhower 11, Iroquois 1

LAWRENCE PARK-Sophomore pitcher Casey Vincent struck out 17 of the 21 outs he recorded, and allowed only one hit, in Eisenhower’s first win of the season, 11-1 over Iroquois on Thursday.

“This was a big game, it was our first time playing a region game against a team the same level as us,” said Ike coach Cody Vincent, Casey’s older brother who pitched at Division 1 St. Bonaventure. “Our season comes down to beating Iroquois and Youngsville to make the playoffs, so it was a good statement win.”

Vincent was just as impressive with the bat as he was on the mound, going 5-for-5 on the day with four runs batted in. He singled home Allan Jackson and Logan Bellardo in the top of the fifth to crack a scoreless tie before coming around to score on Kyle Hunt’s RBI single.

Iroquois answered with one run in the bottom of the inning, but the Knights broke out with an eight-spot in the seventh thanks to RBI base hits by Vincent, Bellardo, Tab Berkhous, Shane Arford, Jake Harvey, and Bryce Garris.

Bellardo finished the game going 3-for-5 and Hunt was 2-for-4.

Eisenhower (1-2 overall, 1-2 in Region 4) takes on Mercyhurst Prep in a non-region game Saturday at Werner Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Franklin 7, Youngsville 1

FRANKLIN-Youngsville suffered its first loss of the season by a score of 7-1 against Region 4-opponent Franklin on Thursday.

The Eagles managed just two hits as they fall to 2-1 on the year.

“(Franklin’s) pitchers are much better than anything we’ve seen this year. That was by far the difference,” said Youngsville coach Wayne Marino. “We played solid, we just couldn’t put the bat on the ball.”

Aaron Hoover doubled home Youngsville’s only run in the top of the first, and Thomas Henry had the only other hit.

The Eagles will take the field in a non-region game Tuesday at Maplewood.
