Over/Under 200 soccer
Billed as "A Celebration of Soccer," the 20th annual Over and Under 200 Soccer Matches will take place beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, at War Memorial Field as part of Warren's Independence Day Celebration. The event is open to the public, and all area residents and fans of soccer are invited to attend.
Established 20 years ago as part of Warren's 1995 Bicentennial Celebration, these yearly match-ups pit teams of soccer players whose total ages exceed 200 against players whose combined ages total less than 200. There will be two matches played this year.
The first match at 1:30 p.m. will feature a women's team of alumni versus varsity-age players.
The second match at 3:30 p.m. will be played for the Bicentennial Challenge Cup. This match will feature soccer players, the "Old Boys," playing against a team of high school-aged boys, the "Young Guns." The Old Boys are an Alumni team made up of past graduates from local high schools and a few of the original members of the Warren team that played in the Interstate Soccer League (founded in 1979), and current "Under 90" recreational players. Their opponents will be current high school aged players.
The "Young Guns" hold a 10-win, 1-loss, 7-ties advantage over the "Old Boys" in this series.
For information about playing, call Mark Evans, 723-6505, or Bobby Domville, 723-2236.
Warren-native Devon Olson defended his Laurel Highlands Ultra 70.5-mile trail run (www.laurelultra.com/) win from last year with a better time this year - winning in 11:50.23 (compared to 12:05.27 last year) in Ohiopyle, Pa. over 100-plus entrants. Olson was paced by Warren's Eric Morelli.
