Big individual efforts helped the Eisenhower boys track team and Youngsville girls softball team this week. Eisenhower's Jake VanHouten, left, was a rare four-time individual event winner in 300 hurdles, long jump, triple jump and high jump in a 99-42 region win over Youngsville. He also won the 200, triple jump and 300 hurdles in a 100-49 win over Union City. Funny thing, he smashed the Ike school record in the 300 hurdles , until head coach David Bauer realized there were only seven hurdles out instead of the necessary eight. Youngsville's Katie Gustafson has helped the Lady Eagles beat Eisenhower twice with game-winning hits. This week, she was 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBI, including the go-ahead 3-run homer that made it 7-5 in an 8-5 win. A little over a week earlier, her two-out two-run triple beat Ike 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh. She was also 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI and winning pitcher in a 9-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday. VanHouten and Gustafson are the Times Observer Athletes of the Week, sponsored by McDonald's.
