Youngsville Borough is going tobacco-free for its public green spaces.
At its monthly meeting, Borough Council unanimously approved an ordinance based on the Penn State Extension program Young Lungs at Play. The ordinance prohibits all tobacco products at Island Park, Division Street Park, the Davis Street ballfields, and Hilltop Park - Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool, according acting borough manager Lisa Hagberg.
According to information from Penn State Extension, there are several reasons for prohibiting tobacco use, especially smoking, at parks and playgrounds - "children are hurt by secondhand smoke, cigarette butts pollute our parks, and children imitate adult behaviors."
The ordinance was recommended to council by the recreation commission.
Borough officials are hoping the weather allows extensive maintenance on the pool.
The Friends of Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool is looking at having the pool sandblasted and informed council the group plans to pay for the work.
"The pool needs a paint job," Hagberg said. "The real problem is the weather, they need about five days of no precipitation."
The pool will open to the public on Saturday, June 8, she said, but any sandblasting and painting must be completed much sooner. Hagberg said officials plan to start filling the pool on May 17 to allow time for the water temperature to rise.
Students from Youngsville Elementary Middle School are scheduled to use the pool during the week prior to the public opening, she said.
If sandblasting cannot be completed in time, the borough and Friends may opt to rent a sander - a Flaky Jake - and sand and repaint the bottom of the pool only.
This summer, the borough will celebrate the 200th anniversary of its 1813 incorporation.
"The Bicentennial Committee is working to put on a wonderful 200th birthday party for Youngsville Borough," Hagberg said. The party will run three days - Friday, June 28 through Sunday, June 30 at Island Park.
The next bicentennial meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the borough building.
The committee is looking for volunteers for various aspects of the event as well as vendors. Those interested in contributing or participating should contact Phyllis Wolfe at 688-0001.
