Sheffield was going to get its ninth win of the year if it took all night.
It almost did, after the home match with Cranberry was delayed two hours while both teams waited for a referee to arrive.
When things finally got underway, the Wolverines hung on for a 40-30 victory over Cranberry, which they have beaten just three times in dual matches dating back to the 1980-1981 season - winning three of 30 matches on record.

Sheffield's Tyler Bertin holds down Cranberry's Justus Burn for a pin in the 220-pound match Thursday night at Sheffield Area High School. Bertin's pin locked up the win for the Wolverines, who according to coach Jack Rice are closing in on the school record for wins in a season.
The match of the night came from Tyler Bertin, who took to the mat at 220 pounds against Cranberry's Justus Burk (15-3) with the pressure of a 34-30 lead in favor of the Wolverines. Bertin left nothing to chance, pinning Burn in the second period to secure the win in front of the home crowd.
Not bad for a first-year wrestler.
"Cranberry is real tough in the upper weights," said Sheffield coach Jack Rice, who was a state champion at Cranberry in high school. "Tyler did great, everyone wrestled well tonight. I couldn't be happier."
According to Rice, the Wolverines are closing in on tying the school record for team wins in a season.
Thursday night's win may have been clinched in the final match, but it was a total group effort early on that got the ball rolling, he said.
Cranberry got a quick pin to start the night in the heavyweight match-up, but forfeited the 106-pound match to even things up at 6-6 before Sheffield took off.
The Wolverines got decision wins from Kyle Holden at 113, Brandon Johnston at 126, Adam Barr at 145, and Steve Gregerson at 160, as well as a major decision from Doug Grubbs at 138. Sheffield's other pin on the night came from Ricky Prosen, who downed Cranberry's Kyle Bryan in 52 seconds in the 120-pound match.
The visitors made a late push with a pin at 170, a forfeit win at 182, and another pin at 195 before Bertin killed the rally and sealed the win for Sheffield.
The Wolverines will look for win number 10 on Tuesday when they welcome Coudersport to Sheffield Area High School.
