Media violence

January 14, 2013

Dear editor, I enjoyed reading Tim Sorenson’s column in your Saturday edition. He bluntly relates media heros of the days when media heros were actually heroes......

"They let me have a car, but tell me I have to wear a seat belt or get a fine. Hmmm."

Just another reason the government dshould not be as involved in controling our lives. Yes, the law is that you have to wear a seatbels, but not a helmet on a motorcycle? Makes perfect sense to me.

They force tax-payers to fund my birth control, but tell me I'm not allowed to "sell my services" or get a fine. Hmmm. (I AM NOT ADVOCATING PR05T1TUT10N. Just making a point.)

"I guess if you're more than 50 feet away from your house, you can take your shotgun."

The point is that it is not your or the government's place to dictate that. Have you ever read the second amendment?

"Handguns need some kind of technology that won't let them fire more than 50 feet from their house or only by the person to whom it's registered."

My property is much larger than 50 feet. This "technology" is pretty far out there.

"If we disarm the criminals as we catch them"

Pardon me, but if we cut off their arms, how will they eat? Seems a bit cruel.

If we disarm the criminals as we catch them and prevent their access to new guns, over time they won't be the only ones with guns. It's pretty hard for a criminal to sneak around with a hunting rifle, which is all anyone really needs to protect their home. I'd be ok with shotguns, too. Handguns need some kind of technology that won't let them fire more than 50 feet from their house or only by the person to whom it's registered.

"My wings are like a shield of steel."

You must have to flap really hard to fly with steel wings.

Bravo, lets kill the first amendment to ensure total access to weapons of any type.

As i said in response to the other letter....there have been guns on TV and in movies for decades. The Lone Ranger had a gun. Gunsmoke started in 1955 on TV and before that it was a radio show. Wouldn't want to count how much ammo Bonanza fired off. I played Dungeons and Dragons for years yet i never felt the need to hit someone with a battleaxe. Hundreds of times i have seen people killed on TV and in the movies yet i never thought once about doing it myself. I listened to Ozzy Osborne and Judas Priest and have not killed myself or bit the head off a bat. Only someone mentally ill would watch a show or a movie involving killing and think they should imitate it.

" Your mind is totally controlled and has been stuffed into my mould and you will do as you are told until the rights to you are sold".So thats the problem eh?The Media, You ask "Whats the next step"Lets try better mental health programs in our country Where people can get the help they need.Currently its a disgrace.Didnt I hear an NRA spokesman say something to the affect that we need to get all these "wackos off the street". Between 10-20% of Americans have some form of mental illness less than 50% of those get help. If its easier to buy an assult rifle than to get treatment we might as a society want to take a look at that as well.

God I hate the word "Ban". By trying to "ban" something that encourages more people to watch or buy it. When my kids were growing up I had control of the TV, not them. There were programs that they were not permitted to watch including some cartoons. If we had a sitter to watch the kids a list was provided of the non acceptable programs. I would voice my opinions on why. As a parent that was my choice. If there is a program I find offensive, I do the unthinkable, I change the channel.
