Our opinion: Sheffield’s rebound attempt
Warren County School District officials are being asked to return a girls basketball team to the court next season.
We’d be skeptical if the effort was being led by parents. It’s a different matter that the effort is being led by students. Emily Davidson, one of the girls who wants to play for Sheffield, told school board members recently there are at least seven freshmen who want to play.
In 2021, it was reported that only five girls had registered to play high school basketball at Sheffield — a number well below Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association requirements to field a team. In response, the district board approved a cooperative agreement allowing Sheffield students to play girls basketball on the Warren varsity and junior varsity teams. The agreement provided an opportunity for students to play, despite the school being unable to field a team of its own.
The important thing is that the Sheffield basketball players have the opportunity to play, whether it’s in Warren or in Sheffield. But if there are enough players to field a junior varsity and a varsity team, then Sheffield should be allowed to field its own team next winter.
