Giving spirit in uncertain times

COVID-19 tested our community’s philanthropic spirit — and our residents and businesses passed the test with flying colors.

Lacey Hanson, United Fund of Warren executive director, wasn’t always sure the Torchlight Campaign’s $680,000 goal would be met.

“Then, I was getting envelopes every day. There were some donations that had me in tears,” Hanson said.

About 50% of the money raised goes to support programs for children, and another 15% is directed to senior citizens. About 17% of the money is used for emergency services through the Salvation Army and the Red Cross. Counseling for families and individuals is available through Hospice of Warren County and Family Services, accounting for 12% of the money raised. Services for those with disabilities receive 6% of the fund’s allocations.

This is money that is absolutely necessary for many people in Warren County, particularly during a year when many organizations haven’t been able to raise money in their usual ways due to the pandemic.

All those who donated deserve a pat on the back. You’ve made your neighbors’ lives a little bit better during a difficult time.
