Our opinion: Praise for effort by YMCA

Many residents, especially our youth, have not had the opportunities to keep a regular schedule over the last six months due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In early March, Gov. Tom Wolf decided to move learning to a remote platform and shutdown the schools.

This not only impacted a way of learning, it also reduced — especially in the winter — physical activity without regular gym classes or spring sports. This fall, the Warren County YMCA has an offer to keep some middle-schoolers moving.

For seventh-graders, membership to the organization will be free. According to Kim Slocum, marketing and grant coordinator, this segment of students are underserved.

“They are in that in-between time where recreational sports have ended and they haven’t picked a sport to participate in in school,” Slocum said. “At this age, youth tend to begin facing the challenges of adolescence and begin exhibiting behavior including distancing themselves from formal organizations, friends and family, experiment with unhealthy and illegal behaviors (and) lose a sense of belonging.”

Contributions to the United Fund will benefit this program. For more information, contact andrew@warrenymca.org or call 726-0110.
