Our Opinion: Don’t lock out small businesses

With Congress considering another expensive bill to help small businesses and their employees deal with shutdowns and slowdowns due to the COVID-19 epidemic, it important for lawmakers to remember that money is not everything.

Obviously, tons of it will be needed to help small businesses. But no matter how much money is available, business owners, including sole proprietors, have to be able to access it.

Small businesses are to receive the aid through the nation’s banks.

Yet we have heard numerous complaints that some banks may not be able to comply with rules for participation in the program. That needs to be corrected, with due consideration for banks’ ability to administer loans.

In considering another COVID-19 relief bill, lawmakers need to ensure it does not lock out some small businesses.
