Manfred Edling

Fred Edling, formerly of Bolton, MA, passed away on June 28th at Framingham Union Hospital. He was two days short of his 76th birthday. He had been dealing with Parkinson’s Disease for the last few years.

Fred was born in Alsheim, Germany in 1948 and came to the United States in 1953 with his late parents, Jakob and Marga Edling and brother John. They settled in Warren, PA, and his parents worked for Sylvania Electric while Fred entered the Warren School System and became fluent in English very quickly. It was there he met the love of his life in grade school, Judy Lundahl, and they became sweethearts through high school and then college at Penn State University. While at Penn State, Fred acquired a degree in accounting. After both graduated from PSU in 1970, they were married in Warren in June of 1971. They began their married life living in New Jersey, first in Clark and then in Westfield, NJ where they raised their family until a corporate move in 1992 took them to Ridgefield, CT. Fred worked in NYC first as a CPA and then in the corporate finance offices of CBS and later as CFO of a French Cosmetic Firm. In 1991 Thompson Publishing Group recruited him to be a CFO of one of its two divisions leading to the move to Ridgefield, CT and then in 1996 to Sudbury, MA. From 2004 until 2017 they lived in Stow, MA and then in Bolton, MA for the last seven years.

Fred was well liked and respected by all who knew him. He was a devoted husband, a loving father to his children and well beloved by his grandchildren. He was an extremely hard worker and that contributed to his success in both his personal and private life. He was athletic and a very good tennis player and golfer at one time. He was extremely handy around the house and undertook many successful home improvements around his homes. He was also an excellent cook, especially when it came to outdoor grilling. It was a treat to be a guest in his home on these occasions. He also was a good bridge player along with his wife Judy and they shared that interest with many of their friends. Fred had a very subtle sense of humor and always enjoyed a good laugh. All who knew him will miss him.

Sadly, last November Fred’s wonderful wife, Judy, died and it was a difficult time for him to lose the love of his life as it was for their family and their many friends.

Besides wife Judy, Fred was preceded in death by his parents and his brother John along with a son, Andrew, who died in infancy.

Surviving are his sons Christopher of Burlington, VT, son, Jeffrey (Meghan) Edling, of West Chester, PA, son, Peter (Laura) Edling of Hinesburg, VT and a daughter, Katie (Ryan) Tomasetti of Maynard, MA. Fred also leaves five adoring grandchildren, Ella, Henry, Crosby, Tula and Addie.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 12th at the Sudbury United Methodist Church at 10 AM. All are welcome.
