Mary Roos Schorman

Mary Roos Schorman, 94, of Warren, P.A., died Saturday, March 13, 2021 at the John and Orpha Blair Hospice Residence, after a brief illness.

Born April 6, 1926 in Warren, P.A., she was the daughter of the late Hilmar and Hattie Cobb Roos. She had resided her entire life in Warren, P.A., and was a 1944 graduate of Warren High School. She graduated as a registered nurse from the Millard Filmore Hospital Nursing School of Buffalo, N.Y., and earned a bachelor of science degree in public school nursing from Edinboro State College. She was employed with the Warren General Hospital and later as a school nurse with the Warren County School District, retiring after 22 ¢ years.

She was a grief counselor and a founding member of the Hospice of Warren County, where she volunteered for many years as a bereavement specialist, earning certification as a thanatologist and grief counselor from the Association of Death Education and Counseling. The hospice bereavement center was officially named “The Schorman Center – a Place for Healing Grief and Loss” in her honor in 2019. She was also a founding member of the Warren Senior Center, Warren League of Women Voters, and Experience, Inc. She was a longtime member of the Warren Shakespeare Club, the Blue Stocking Club, the Warren Women’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma and Zonta Club. She had been honored with a Pennsylvania Hospice Network Heart of Hospice Award, a Delta Kappa Gamma Distinguished Woman Award and Zonta Club Women Who Make a Difference Award. She had served on the Warren General Hospital Board of Directors and Institutional Review Board and on the board of directors and advisory board for Hospice of Warren County. She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church and was involved in many church activities, including service on the church’s pastoral relations committee.

She is survived by her children – Robert R. Schorman and wife, Judi Hetrick of Oxford, O.H., Deborah California of Meadville, P.A., Barbara Mintzer of Warren, P.A., one sister, Dorothy Smith of Corry, P.A., six grandchildren – Ryan (Shannon) California of York, P.A., Elizabeth (Kirk) California Domanick of Mooresville, N.C., Rachel (John) Wojcicki of Ashville, N.C., Kate (Adam) Diecks of Pittsburgh, P.A., Emily (Chris) Canovico of Niagara Falls, NY, Adam Mintzer of Warren, P.A., seven great grandchildren – Jordan Arthur, Jackson and Alyssa Canovico, Grant and Amelia California, Samuel and Lila Wojcicki, one great great granddaughter, Blaire Arthur, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of more than 61 years, Thomas R. Schorman, who died Dec. 2, 2009, one grandson, Ronald California, Jr., one sister, Florence Spear, two son-in-laws, Ronald California and Thomas Mintzer.

Friends may call at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East Street, Warren, P.A., on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. where CDC guidelines of face masks, social distancing will be observed. A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, March 18, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Pennsylvania Avenue East, Warren, P.A. with Rev. William R. Beatty, officiating.
