Richard Finley

Richard E Finley, 91, of State College, PA died on January 1, 2018. Born in Warren PA in 1926 he was the son of the late Edward J and Elaine Lytle Finley.

After serving in the Army during WWII, He married the love of his life, Barbara Rupert, they shared 62 years together, before her death in 2011.

He graduated from Warren High in 1944. Taking advantage of the G. I. Bill, he went to Potomac State, in WV for two years, he then completed his education at Penn State University, earning his Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD of Education.

He began his teaching and coaching career at East Forest HS in Marienville, PA. He was a Principal in the Athens Area School District, and then became professor at Mansfield State College, where he was also a coach, Athletic Director, and eventually Vice President.

He and his wife retired to State College, where he taught graduate classes at PSU, and was associated with the Professional Golf Management program.

He was an avid golfer and a fan of Penn State University, having season tickets to football and Men’s & Women’s basketball, for many years.

Besides his parents and wife, he was proceeded in death by two sisters, Margaret “Peg” Yeagle, and Jo Ann Finley.

Survivors include a sister Judy(Gerald) Nuhfer of Sheffield, PA, a son Dirk (Diane) Finley, of Clarendon, PA, a daughter Marianne (Tom) Simons, of St Simons Island, GA. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Melissa (James) Treacy, Allison (Chris) Hodell and a grandson Jude (Ashley) Harter, five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A private internment will take place, at a later date.
